This Traineeship Report was prepared within the framework of the Supervised Teaching Practice component of the Master's Degree in Pre-School Education and Teaching of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education, by the Superior School of Education of Paula Frassinetti. Increasingly, we see the effort and concern on the part of education professionals in finding ways to motivate and encourage students to learn. It is from here that the need arises to structure, build and adapt differentiating methods of learning, achieving a quality teaching - learning. Thus, this report focuses on the field of mathematics, namely in numbers and operations, where structured manipulable materials begin to be present in differentiating planning, and these begin to play a key role in the EPE and 1st CEB rooms. So the question arises from the present study "What is the role of structured manipulable materials in the learning of numbers and operations in EPE and in the 1st CEB?", Where it is governed by the following objectives: to work the decimal system using the decomposition of numbers; to perceive the impact of structured materials in the teaching progress - learning; solving everyday problems involving small quantities with addition and subtraction; identify natural numbers up to 50 and identify quantities through different forms of representation (counting and writing numbers). The research involved two distinct contexts, including a private institution in pre-school education, with 22 children and a public school in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education, with 24 students, in the district of Porto. The methodology used focuses on an interpretative paradigm, of a qualitative nature, in the case study modality. In this way, 3 activities were structured, where several techniques of data collection were used, among them: participant observation, photos, evaluation grids and activity sheets. The results show that the activities developed in the two cycles using structured manipulable materials facilitate the teaching / learning process of the children / students, since they adapt to their difficulties.
