O olhar das crianças sobre as Atividades Extracurriculares e a ocupação do seu tempo livre

Abstract

Este documento aborda a temática “O Olhar das crianças sobre as Atividades Extracurriculares e a ocupação do seu tempo livre”, ressaltando a relevância de garantir momentos de liberdade e escolha para o desenvolvimento integral infantil. No contexto atual, marcado por agendas frequentemente sobrecarregadas, evidencia-se a necessidade de equilibrar a participação das crianças nas atividades estruturadas respeitando as suas preferências e o tempo livre. O estudo empírico, realizado em duas instituições do Distrito do Porto, adotou uma metodologia mista que combinou grupos focais com crianças de 5 anos e inquéritos aplicados aos professores das Atividades Extracurriculares. Os resultados revelaram que, apesar da forte influência dos adultos na seleção das atividades, as crianças expressaram preferências próprias e conseguiram avaliar criticamente as suas experiências. Destaca-se que a autonomia na escolha, mesmo quando resulta num menor número de atividades, está associada a maior envolvimento e satisfação. A análise reforça a importância da escuta ativa da criança e do equilíbrio entre orientação adulta e autonomia, promovendo o bem-estar e uma participação mais consciente nos contextos educativos. Evidenciou-se, igualmente, a preferência das crianças por momentos menos estruturados, caracterizados pela liberdade de ação e pelo convívio familiar.

This document addresses the theme “Children’s perspectives on extracurricular activities and the use of their free time,” highlighting the importance of ensuring moments of freedom and choice for children’s holistic development. In the current context, marked by increasingly overloaded schedules, the need to balance children’s participation in structured activities with respect for their preferences and free time becomes evident. The empirical study, conducted in two institutions in the Porto District, adopted a mixed-methods approach combining focus groups with five years old children and surveys administered to teachers responsible for extracurricular activities. The findings revealed that, despite the strong influence of adults on the selection of activities, children expressed their own preferences and were capable of critically evaluating their experiences. It is noteworthy that autonomy in decision-making even when it results in participation in fewer activities is associated with higher levels of engagement and satisfaction. The analysis reinforces the importance of actively listening to children and maintaining a balance between adult guidance and child autonomy, thereby promoting well-being and more conscious participation in educational contexts. It was also evident that children show a preference for less structured moments, characterized by freedom of action and family interaction.
