A arte de cuidar: necessidades e dificuldades de cuidadores informais de pessoas idosas em situação de dependência

Abstract

Numa sociedade cada vez mais envelhecida e onde se procura retardar a institucionalização das pessoas idosas, emerge uma figura com um papel muitas vezes esquecido. Referi-mo-nos ao cuidador informal, que dedica parte ou grande parte do seu dia e da sua vida a um ato de solidariedade e amor, o ato de cuidar. A qualquer momento um familiar, amigo ou vizinho pode ficar numa situação de dependência, tendo necessidade de recorrer à ajuda de terceiros. Quando essa ajuda não chega por parte de uma instituição, procuram-se alternativas, quase sempre encontradas no seio familiar. Surge a figura do cuidador informal, que exerce a tarefa de cuidar, sem remuneração, muitas vezes sem experiência, formação ou mesmo vocação. No entanto, pelo amor que os une, não desiste da dar o seu melhor, na tentativa de proporcionar a melhor qualidade de vida possível à pessoa cuidada, colocando-se muitas vezes em último lugar. Este projeto procura retratar uma realidade dos nossos dias, procurando perceber quais as dificuldades sentidas pelos cuidadores informais e sugerindo uma intervenção comunitária baseada no levantamento realizado através de inquéritos aos mesmos. O objetivo é envolver a comunidade, dando-lhe a oportunidade de definir os problemas e necessidades, e participar na procura de soluções, provocando a mudança desejada – melhoria da qualidade de vida do cuidador informal e da pessoa idosa dependente. Com a intervenção comunitária pretende-se prevenir o burnout do cuidador informal, através de uma série de iniciativas onde o próprio terá um papel de destaque.

In an increasingly ageing society and where one seeks to delay the institutionalization of the elderly, a figure with a crucial, but quite often forgotten, role emerges. We are referring to the informal caregiver, who dedicates part or most of his/her day and life to an act of solidarity and love, the act of caring. At any given time, a family member, friend or neighbour may find him/herself in a situation of dependence, thus needing to resort to the aid of third parties. When such aid does not arise from an institution, one seeks alternatives, often found within the family itself. The figure of the informal caregiver then appears, the person who provides care, non-remunerated, often without any experience, training or even vocation. However, due to the love their share, he/she does not withdraw from doing his/her best, in an attempt to provide the best possible quality of life to the person cared for, often placing him/herself last. This project seeks to portray a reality of our everyday life, while seeking to understand the difficulties experienced by informal caregivers and suggesting a community intervention, based on the survey conducted through questionnaires handed to them. The goal is to involve the community, while providing the opportunity to define problems and needs, and participate in the solution-finding process, thus causing the desired change - improving the quality of life of the informal caregiver and of the dependent elderly. With the community intervention, one intends to prevent the caregiver's burnout, through a series of initiatives where he/she shall play a major role.
