The present report has been prepared within the framework of the Master’s degree in teaching the first cycle of basic education and Portuguese/ History and Geography of Portugal in the second cycle of basic education, under the guidance of Dr. Luis Miguel Alves Gomes Prata, of Escola Superior Paula Frassinetti. This research report has as its main focus the perception of how the discussion and debate in the field of Human Rights is possible using the tools of reading and writing. Therefore, we first present a theoretical approach confined to Human Rights, in which we refer to their historical evolution, principles and main objectives and then in the follow-up, we address the importance of their promotion. We thought it appropriate to approach the theme of Human Rights confined to a concrete context and such was possible by analysing the specific case of Portugal. Limited to the Portuguese context, we consider the nature of the promotion of Human Rights as well as the contribution of citizenship to the feasibility of Portugal, which we had already presented at the referred time to the importance of promotion. In the wake of this research report, we considered it pertinent to reference projects in the field of Human Rights and thus demonstrate the promotion for, with and within Human Rights, alluding to an explanation of positions and ways of addressing the same theme. Having completed the first theoretical part in which we demonstrated several positions in which the promotion of Human Rights and its importance is acknowleged, we found that it was necessary to articulate this theme with the tools schools’ use to address the topic and ensure that the same arises in an educational context. So, we considered it pertinent to articulate the theme of Human Rights with the importance of literacy - reading and writing -, trying to perceive how these tools contribute to the promotion of Human Rights. In conjunction with the theory that we summarize here, we applied "Reading and Writing with Anne Frank", provided by the Anne Frank House, in four classes of the sixth year of the second cycle of basic education. In this research report, we will make reference to the methodology, which we anticipate to be qualitative, immediate references to the context as well as data analysis and respective conclusions.
