Being fluent in the Portuguese Language (PL), mother tongue of most Portuguese people, but non-mother tongue of a significant number of residents, is clearly a major contribute for a conscious and participated citizenship. Within this context, we have questioned how these people feel towards the PL, the importance they assign to their daily and future lives, as well as the linguistic difficulties they may show. So that we can understand this issue, we analyse data gathered with members of the following communities: Cape Verde, Ukraine and Chinese, that represent «distinct migrant generations ». Although our study focus on adults and young adults, we consider that their representations of the PL, mainly as far as their learning experiences are concerned, may give a teacher hints about the language teaching methods and give the school hints about its needs, that reflect today’s plural society. |
